Free post-Prostate Screening pint!
The White Horse pub and restaurant in Balsall Common, in conjunction with Charles Wells Brewery, is rewarding men who attend a prostate screening with a complimentary pint of beer.
On Saturday 18th May from 10am – 1pm, Balsall Common Lions are inviting local men, especially those over 50, to a prostate screening at St Peter’s Church Hall, Holly Lane, Balsall Common and the first 200 people to visit for the simple blood test will be provided with a free drink voucher to redeem on the same day at the Kenilworth Road pub.
Alastair Tyson, owner of The White Horse said: “We are hoping the offer of a free pint of beer – or a soft drink – will encourage gents to get themselves checked. We are delighted to support the Balsall Common Lions and increase local community awareness of this incredibly important event.”
The 18th May session is the fourth screening Balsall Common Lions have hosted, testing approximately 750 men to date.
The screening involves qualified phlebotomists taking a blood sample which will be sent to a hospital laboratory for analysis. Retired consultant urologist, David Baxter-Smith will also be at the session providing informative talks about prostate health. Results are provided in confidence by Graham Fulford Charitable Trust, in writing in the coming weeks.
Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer in the UK with over 40,000 men diagnosed each year and more than 10,000 dying from the disease. Early diagnosis is linked to a more positive outcome and a PSA test can often be an important signpost for further investigation.
Lions meet the needs of local communities and the world every day because they share a core belief – to serve their community. Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organisation. They have 1.4 million members in more than 45,000 clubs in more than 210 countries and geographic areas.

The White Horse ‘free post-prostate pint’ voucher will be handed to men at the session on Saturday 18 May and redeemable at the pub, which is just a short walk away from the St Peter’s Church Hall screening venue, on the same day. Vouchers will be valid for one pint of Carling, Eagle or a soft drink alternative.
