What is Tapas

Tapas is not a specific type of food as the word “tapa” means lid or cover. The term does not exclusively refer to Spanish food as there are a number of Moroccan bars and restaurants that serve such things as cous cous, kebabs and falafel and are mainly to be found in Southern Spain where tapas originated.

As with many historical subjects there remains some debate as to why a tapa was placed on a small dish or wooden platter covering the top of your drink. Originally this would have been a small amount of ham or cheese. Maybe this was because any of the bar owners families would have produced their own jamones (hams) or quesos (cheeses) thereby reducing the cost of a free snack.
